Best Town Square #7: Krakow, Poland – Rynek Glowny

#7: Krakow, Poland – Rynek Glowny (5% of the vote) Well this should prove that the voting was not rigged. As many of you know, I had said that this was my favorite town square in the world. While Krakow’s popular meeting place did great in round 1 and 2, it just lost those much needed voters in the finals. Oh well…I will mourn the loss over a Zywiec beer in a few days when I visit the former capitol of Poland.

Lonely Planet review of Rynek Glowny

Measuring 200m by 200m, Kraków’s Rynek Główny is the largest medieval town square in Europe and one of the finest urban designs of its kind. Its layout, based on that of a castrum (Roman military camp), was drawn up in 1257 and has been retained to this day, though the buildings have changed substantially over the centuries.

Most of them now look neoclassical, but don’t let the façades confuse you – the basic structures are much older, as can be seen by their doorways, architectural details and interiors. For more information on Krakow, Poland, check out the Lonely Planet guide.

I’ll be back at midnight EST with #6.
