Although this is first and foremost a travel blog, I could not pass up mentioning this great event that is happening right in my backyard. I guess it could still technically be considered a “travel” topic since you need to hop a train or drive your car to get to the locale.

In any event, clear your calendar and shine up your tacky bowling shoes, because this coming Saturday September 12 is the 2009 New York Twestival at the Brooklyn Bowl in Willamsburg. Now you may be asking yourself, what exactly is a Twestival??? That is simply the nickname of a  “Twitter Festival,” which is just one of the many social media sites used to get the word out for a good cause.

This year’s New York Twestival will be a star studded fundraiser that will raise money to benefit CampInteractive. CampInteractive is a local non-profit organization that empowers at-risk, inner-city youth through the inspiration of the outdoors and the creative power of technology.

Brooklyn Bowl entertainment complex in Williamsburg, which is the site of New York Twestival 2009, offers 16 bowling lanes, a 600-capacity performance venue, and an in house branch of the acclaimed Blue Ribbon restaurant. The Brooklyn Bowl is also an eco-friendly space: it is L.E.E.D Certified for sustainable green building and development practices; powered by 100% wind electricity; no bottles are no cans are offered in the space; the stage floor is made of 100% recycled truck tires; and so much more.

Participants will be asked to purchase a group package which entitles them to their very own lane with a celebrity. Although the site does not list any of the celebs names, they promise “entertainment elite” at the event.

Not a bowler? No problem! The night will be filled with various other festivities throughout the newly opened Brooklyn Bowl entertainment complex, including live performances from some of New York’s top emerging artists.

The previous New York Twestival raised over $25k and had more than 900 people in attendance. This time around the generous staff is looking to raise an impressive $50k before the night is over. Tickets are currently $20 as I post this article, but will jump up to $40 days before the event, so act now and save! 100% of the money raised goes directly to CampInteractive. To buy your tickets or simply send a donation, click here. Plus since this is a “Twitter-friendly” event, be sure to follow New York Twestival online.
