The annual running of the bulls kicked off Tuesday in Pamplona, Spain. The insane and fearless alike came out in droves to take part in a ritual that dates back to the Middle Ages.

Fortunately no one was gored by any bulls on opening night (the celebration is July 7-14), but four individuals were taken to a nearby hospital due to being knocked around during the frenzy.

The people that take part in this event range from tourists looking for an extreme thrill to avid runners. The more experienced participants have a saying, “Some of us run fast to impress friends, some of us run fast to score the best time. Some of us just run fast because there is a bull with big horns right about to jab us in the back.”

Six giant bulls are let loose as runners, who traditionally sport an all white outfit with a red kerchief around their neck, ran down a street falling over each other and at times getting a little love tap from an angry bull. One man reportedly was knocked down and trampled on by fellow runners and even one of the bulls, but luckily was able to escape with just some scratches and a story to tell his friends back home.

There have been 14 fatalities since records have been taken at the event. The last death occurred in 2003 when a 63 year old man died from head injuries he suffered during the run. The last time someone died due to a bull’s attack was when an American tourist was speared in 1995.

For the record, you could not pay me enough in airline miles, Guinness, and cash to take part in this crazy event.

I’d love to do this! But what insurance company would cover a tourist partaking in such an event? Haha. Not only would it be thrilling, but I would get to rock white pants and a red sash—something my wife, Kathryn, wouldn’t let me do around here! Great pic by the way!

a 63 year old in the run? classic case of ego vs. nature
