Nomad Notebook: My Day With “The Dame” – The Roosevelt Hotel New York Review

I recently enjoyed a stay at the historic Roosevelt Hotel. Named after the 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, this grand 4-star hotel is definitely a great place to rest your weary head after a day of checking out everything New York City has to offer. From the moment you step through the revolving doors at 45 East 45th street, you are welcomed with one beautiful lobby. One the day that I arrived the ground floor was bustling with many happy looking customers. That is always a sign of a hotel doing something right.

After I checked in at the front desk (which by the way was quick and painless) I grabbed one of their many elevators up to room 908. Now when you visit Manhattan you have to do it right…and by right I mean book a suite! Yes my friends on this day yours truly was lucky enough to snag one of the 52 suites offered at this 1,015 room hotel.

Now I have stayed at my fair share of suites in the past, but the Roosevelt’s version was easily one of the most spacious and well-designed suites that I have ever had the privilege to visit.

The bedroom in my suite was equipped with an king sized (super comfortable) bed, an HD flat screen television, a private bathroom equipped with a separate shower and bathtub, two chairs, a work desk with internet capabilities (additional charge), and even my very own robe (I make it a rule to wear a robe at every hotel I visit).

The living room area was just as enjoyable to hang out in as the bedroom. This part of the suite offers guests a nice sized couch, two chairs, coffee table, dining table with four chairs, refrigerator, an HD flat screen television, and a great bird’s eye view out your window of Madison Avenue and 45 street.

Living room area of the suite includes an HD flatscreen television & dining area.

More things you might like to know about The Roosevelt Hotel:

  • Check in at 3pm – check out at noon.
  • Rooms are equipped with in-room hair dryer, ironing board and iron, & dual telephone lines with voice mail.
  • On site fitness facility is open to guests 24 hours a day.
  • Valet laundry, valet or self-parking, business center, and WiFi wireless internet ($14.95 per 24 hours)
  • Need tickets to a show? Want to know where a good Mexican restaurant is located? Simply call or visit the concierge desk in the lobby for assistance. I personally used them while staying here and the women at the desk were extremely informative and friendly.
  • Hungry? Order room service (breakfast is served from 6am-11am & dinner is from 5pm-midnight). Or go downstairs and check out one (or all) three dining areas on the premises (Roosevelt Grill, Madison Club Lounge & Mad46).
  • Starbucks coffee is featured daily in the lounge from 6am-11am & in the grill from 6:30am-11 weekdays/6:30am-noon weekends.
  • Enjoy a cocktail (or 10) at the super cozy Madison Club Lounge which is located in the lobby.
  • Want to hang out with the cool crowd way above the city of New York? Then go around the corner to 46th street, hop an elevator ride, and enjoy the view at Mad46 rooftop lounge.
  • The Roosevelt Hotel’s location could not be more perfect for people looking to see all of NYC’s top attractions by foot (or train if you’re lazy like me). Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall are a mere four blocks away, Times Square and the Museum of Modern Art are within walking distance, and sites like Empire State Building, Central Park, United Nations Building, and Madison Square Garden are all roughly one mile away.

I highly recommend The Roosevelt Hotel for a quick visit or extended stay the next time you are in New York. The staff, rooms, and location all make “Teddy” the perfect midtown Manhattan destination.

As I mentioned before- not so impressed with this hotel. I really wanted to be since my friends over at Roger Smith Hotel talk so fondly of it, but my experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

I visited someone who was staying over on a Saturday night. The place was flooded with young debutante’s- some sort of Miss Something pageant- and underaged kids were running around *everywhere*, literally. We planned to go to Mad 46, but I didn’t pack heels on me, just flats and skinny jeans- albeit very expensive designer skinny jeans. Right before we were heading into the lounge, a pair of women in front of us were turned away for the dress code- very rudely. Okay, so they weren’t exactly spring chickens and their jeans weren’t exactly as “nightlife friendly” as what I was wearing, but the actions of the bouncer were enough to make me pull my group aside and pick a different venue. I didn’t even want to chance it because he really went out of his way to make a spectacle of these two women.

I didn’t find the staff particularly helpful and I found them to be a little snooty. Again, possibly because of the special event they were obviously hosting.

Did you tell them you were writing a blog? I wonder if they would have treated me and my group a little nicer had they know I’m an avid travel writer, but it was interesting to see the treatment I received undercover.

I’d also like to say a favorite hotel of mine, The Library Hotel, is nearby, and a better pick, for those with taste similar to me, I guess. Plus, Roger Smith is a few blocks away and an awesome place to stay.

Great review, Andrew. I’ve never stayed there, as I usually visit my sis in NJ, but it looks very nice.

Loved my stay at the Roosevelt. The rooms were spotless and the staff were friendly. I skipped Mad46 as well since we did not come with fancy clothes. We instead walked down to the Beer Bar and then got dinner at Naples 45. Great pizza!

First of all great review. I am really digging this hotel review feature you added to the site. I visit NYC 3-4 times a year and I am always on the look out for new places to stay. I took your advice and tried Hotel Giraffe…lovely hotel! I will definitely add Roosevelt to my list. However at 60 I do not think a visit to their strict night club will be in my plans. I prefer a pub.

I agree with Anna’s comments about how rude the bouncer is at Mad46. I never stayed at Roosevelt, but did try to visit this lounge once and was turned away due to my shoes. Seriously? But my friends have stayed at Roosevelt and loved the hotel. I love the history of it and will most likely book a room there on one of my many NYC shopping trips.

Also agree that The Library is a great hotel. I look forward to your review of that place in the future.
