Beautiful day in Raciborz, Poland. By the way, for the people that have emailed and asked, the way to pronounce this city is “Rah-Chee-Boosh.” It is a small city of 70,000 residents that is about 2 hours outside of Krakow. Surprisingly the small southern Poland city is packed with cars.

Seriously I thought that this place would have a few automobiles here and there, but instead they suffer from not enough parking spaces and rush hour traffic every day from 3-5pm. Speaking of the cars, the people drive here like maniacs. But if you have ever visited a European city that is a pretty common issue.

I have been here for about a week and may have put on 30 lbs. The food is just so great. From pierogis to rolady . The most popular dish of Raciborz is rolady (roh-lah-dee). This tasty treat is a flat piece of beef that is stuffed with mushrooms, bacon, onion, pickles, mustard and various vegetables. It is then rolled up, cooked on the stove top with a rich brown gravy and served with a side of kluski slaskie (which are like over sized gnocchi).

So far the trip has been better than I expected. I spoke with some locals and it is interesting to hear their views on different subjects like…

  • Politics: They love Obama, hate Bush, are against the Iraq war, and hate their president.
  • Entertainment: American rap music is very popular among the young people and country is huge with older Poles.
  • Economy: They complain of no jobs, high gas prices, now apply for credit cards, and fear of their Zloty (dollar) changing to the Euro in 2012.
  • Gay marriage: Pretty much all of the younger people are for it, while older people are against it.

.

I will be back with some more pictures from week 1 of my three week Poland trip in a day or so.
