Plan My Next Trip

Posted by Andrew Hickey on Oct 30, 2009 in Travel |

Decide my next trip.

Decide my next trip.

As you may know by now, I really like to travel. I also assume that if you read my blog that you also really like to travel. I mean I am always looking to visit some faraway locale and usually have the next destination planned before my current trip is over.

As a travel junkie, I am not picky either with how I get there…just as long as I get there. I will jump on a plane, train, bus, car, boat, mule, or hail a piggy back ride in order to get from point A to point B.

But with so many places to check out it can often times overwhelm me with the possibilities. Recently I added a poll on the side of this very page asking people to vote and help “send me somewhere.” I chose 10 cities that were all within the United States and Canada.

The options include: New Orleans, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Portland OR, Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver, Austin, and Chicago.

All great cities with plenty of things to see, do, eat, and drink. So for the next 10 weeks I will be asking you to vote for which city you would like me to check out and cover on this site. Each week the lowest city will be eliminated and then on January 1st the winning city will be announced.

Once I find out where you are sending me, I will call upon the experts of that particular location to assist me with recommendations like restaurants, nightlife, attractions, hotels, and more. The trip will take place sometime within the first four months of 2010.

To vote each week, check out the poll on the site.

I just voted for Austin! I am originally from Houston but have lived in Austin for the last 6 years. It is SUCH a cool city — I had a friend in town from Colorado last weekend and it was his first time here, and he was blown away. We call ourselves “the live music capitol” of the world because there is live music here all the time and all over the city. It’s beautiful, laid-back, and is very artsy and quirky. Tons of outdoor activities. It’s the capital of Texas so lots of cool things happen here. So yeah, you know my vote! :)

I would have liked to vote for SEATTLE. It’s where I am, after all, but honestly, the first part of the year is not the best time for a visit, unless you like the rain or are hoping to take in a bit of skiing. Hey, at least I’m honest about it.

I’d rule out Vancouver, because of all the hubbub (and inflated prices) of the Olympics.

My vote — SAN DIEGO. It’s a beautiful city with lots to do, you’ll be visiting at a pleasant time of year, and it’s something totally different from Brooklyn.

Alright, I voted San Diego. I couldn’t let my adopted home town go without one single vote. If you do wind up visiting America’s Finest City, you can call on me for recommendations galore.

I voted for Montreal. I visited Canada in October and I really liked it. It felt a little like Paris up there, not only for the language. Lots of art everywhere, gooood food, nicest people – but it may be a little cold at that time of the year. Nevertheless I loved it there.

Interesting idea. I’d have thought that several would be elimintaed in the first few months of the year purely on weather (Chicago and Canada at the very least). So (not having been there) but always wanting to go as an Australian, I voted for New Orleans.

For all you people thinking I would avoid a city like Chicago or Montreal due to some cold weather, fear not. I love cold climates and actually have been to Chicago and Montreal in February and loved every minute in both locales. Thanks for voting. First elimination will be posted on the site Friday.

Seattle is my favorite city in the US. The place has a very unique character and there’s a variety of nightlife, nature, and of course good music to choose from. Seattle gets my vote.
