National Train Day is May 9 and in celebration of this special occasion, Amtrak has released many money saving coupon codes that range anywhere from 25% off to “buy one, get one free.” Here are ten codes that I found online that will save you a little cash when boarding Amtrak this year (which by the way is the 140th year of coast-to-coast train travel).
- The Downeaster train that runs between the state of Maine and the city of Boston is filled with discounts. The one that caught my eye especially was the “get one free ticket” deal that is valid for northbound departures in the morning and southbound trains in the afternoon or evening. Enter code V773 for this deal. Valid through Dec. 13
- Also aboard the Downeaster kids can ride free on Sundays through June 25 with the code V581. Seniors 62+ receive a 50% discount on travel between Tuesday and Thursday through June 22 with the code V543.
- Northeast travelers that are planning a jaunt to the state of Massachusetts can receive 20% off their ticket when they make a reservation by phone (not online) and reference the discount code V221. This code is valid though Dec. 15.
- Another code that you must use over the phone is if you’re headed to Vermont on any Amtrak train. Reference the code V446 for 20% off all tickets through Oct. 31.
- Couples that purchase tickets together to Newark, NJ through Dec. 16, will receive 40% off their second ticket using the code V558 online. The tip here is that you can use this train to arrive in New York City. Simply book the trek to Newark and get off the train early in the Big Apple and save!
- Couples also have the option of using the code V722 to save 40% off their second ticket for travel to Washington, DC or BWI Airport. This code is valid through Dec. 16.
- Maybe the city of Brotherly Love is in your future. So why not take 20% off your ticket when venturing to Philadelphia? Use the code V451 through May 20 and save.
- Train travelers that are planning to chug along to or from Monterey, CA between now and May 28, can receive a 20% discount on the Coast Starlight train to Salinas and the connecting bus to Monterey. This code however is ONLY valid as part of a ticket to Monterey. Use the code V275 to receive the steep savings.
- Couples heading using the Cascades trains between Monday and Thursday between Eugene, OR and Vancouver, BC through May 22 will receive half off the second ticket when they enter the code H779.
- Finally, for the college students that are looking to hit the rails out west, enter code V363 through June 21 and receive 20% off travel on the Pacific Surfliners. You must purchase your tickets by June 18 and be prepared to show your student ID card.
