Good Times in London & Glasgow

Posted by Andrew Hickey on Jan 31, 2010 in Travel

While I promised updates from the road, it just has been such a busy week in London and Glasgow. I will definitely have a full recap of my trip this week, with many images and travel tips as well.

It was a hell of a good time and thanks again to the great people at VisitBritain for their insanely gracious hospitality and mapping out a fun couple of days that I will soon not forget.

To be continued…

Hop the Pond with CheapOair’s “Long Weekend in London”

Posted by Andrew Hickey on Jan 20, 2010 in Travel

Next week I will be headed to London, England on a press trip provided by VisitBritain and their Transatlanticism campaign. London is easily one of my favorite cities to visit.

Haven’t been? Well then you may want to visit the official CheapOair blog all next week for your chance to enter into a drawing for a trip for two to Jolly Old England.

CheapOair, in partnership with VisitBritain and base2stay hotel, want to send you on a “Long Weekend in London.” One lucky winner and a guest will fly to England’s capital city.

While there they will enjoy 3-nights at the hip base2stay hotel, located in the cool Kensington section of London. You will even receive two Oyster cards (valued at $20 a piece) to get you around town.

For more information, be sure to visit the official Long Weekend in London page for full rules and restrictions. Good luck!

Football, Castles, And Of Course Pubs: I’m Headed To England

Posted by Andrew Hickey on Sep 17, 2009 in Travel

The stairway to Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, England.

The stairway to Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, England.

This Saturday I will be packing my bags and hitting the road again. This time around I will be making my way to “Jolly Old” England chaps. But unlike most visits to this left side of the street driving country, I will not be heading off to typical touristy destinations like London, Manchester, and Liverpool. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Instead I will be catching a train from London and heading to a city in the south-western peninsula of Great Britain called Cornwall. The reason for the visit is to check out an amazing event that will take place simultaneously around the globe on September 22.

Twilight Football, which is sponsored by Sony and tripwolf.com, is going to be a worldwide spectacle that will occur in seven exotic destinations such as Italy’s Venice, the Alps in France, and Pinnacle Desert in Australia. To check out the full list of locales click here.  I will be witnessing a twilight football game live from the historic Tintagel Castle in Cornwall. The remains of Tintagel Castle date back to the 13th century and is the legendary birthplace of King Arthur.

Starting this Sunday I will be posting daily updates from my three day England jaunt, which includes me taking all means of transportation while I am there. I fly to England, taxi through London, hop a train to Plymouth, and will be riding in a speedboat while visiting Padstow. Be sure to also check out tripwolf.com, their blog, my Twitter page, and the Sony Twilight Widget on the side of this page for various reports from across the pond.

In the mean time, check out my site tomorrow for a new weekly feature that will provide you with even more travel related articles to check out. Plus be sure to take a peak at this weekend’s autumn related travel shots.

See you in England and cheers you bunch of wankers.

Americans Vacation Less Due To Work Related Stress

Posted by Andrew Hickey on Apr 19, 2009 in Travel

83814446_bbbf35bf49A survey released by Expedia.com finds that 34 percent of employed Americans will not use all of their earned vacation days in 2009. When asked why they are planning to  not take a break from the office, the number one reply was “work-related pressure.”

On average, American workers will give back three vacation days this year, according to the ninth annual Vacation Deprivation survey performed by the opaque travel website. Expedia’s study also revealed that workers are taking fewer extended vacations, with the number of adults who plan to take a two-week vacation dropping to 10 percent in 2009, as compared to 14 percent in 2008.

Other interesting notes from the survey include:

  • Women tend to feel guiltier than men when it comes to taking time off from work (40 percent of women vs. 29    percent of men).
  • Roughly 39 percent of working Americans expect to use most of their vacation time in 2009 by taking at least    one full week of vacation and spreading out remaining days.
  • On average, Americans had 13 vacation days in 2009, one day less than the previous three years.

.

Although French get the most days off, they were once polled as being the crankiest workers in the world.

Although French get the most days off, they were once polled as being the crankiest workers in the world.

So how did the rest of the world fare in the Expedia Vacation Deprivation survey? Well the site asked countries like Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Australia, Japan, and for the first time, New Zealand. This year, Canadian, French and Australian workers will be granted between one and two more vacation days than in 2008, while all other countries will either receive fewer vacation days or see no change in earned time off.

Want a lot of vacation time? Move to France, where the workers receive and use the most vacation days of all countries surveyed by Expedia. French workers receive 38 days and leave only two days unused.

Now while it may look gloomy for American workers, since we receive the smallest number of vacation days, Japanese employees are the least vacation-minded, as 92 percent of the workers polled said they would not use all vacation days and will leave an average of seven days on the table.
