Website Helps Compare Road Trip & Air Travel Expenses

It is 90 degrees outside today. The sky is blue and the air is fresh…well as fresh as New York City air can be I guess. Anyway, weather like this gives me a severe case of cabin fever and the urge to pack a bag, jump into my car and hit the pavement. Yes, the good old fashion American road  trip. One of my favorite ways to travel is via the automobile and I plan to do most of it that way this year. But does it make sense to pay for gas and drive from point A to point B, when you could simply hop aboard a plane?

Well the guys at “Cost 2 Drive” do all that tedious work for you. Simply type in your location and the destination. Try to be as specific as possible in order to get the best price quote. Then enter in your car information. Click the “Cost 2 Drive” button and await your results.

I took “Cost 2 Drive” out for a test ride and came up with these results:

  • I will depart from Brooklyn, New York to Austin, Texas.
  • The car of choice for this excursion will be my trusty 2002 Toyota Corolla.
  • The results show me traveling a  total of 1757 miles one-way, with a gas bill of $114.31.
  • The site even tells me my carbon footprints…which is 1436.9lbs. Ouch.
  • An icon appears, from Kayak.com, asking if I might want to fly instead. The cost for round-trip fare: $289
  • So if I drive round-trip NYC-Austin, my total would be $228.62…plus of course food, tolls and other expenses.

.

Now that is not a huge difference if I was driving solo. But let’s say I was going along with two or three buddies. Then it would not only make for a fun filled jaunt to the south, but we would also be saving a lot of moolah in the process. I really like the layout of this website and look forward to using it on my many road trips around the country later this summer.
